On June 9, 2026, Euro-Office, a new office software from Europe, will launch. The project aims to provide an alternative to established offerings such as Microsoft 365 and Google Docs. According to the companies and organizations involved, the main goal is to make government agencies, schools, and businesses less dependent on U.S. providers.
Euro-Office is backed by a coalition of various European players. Participants include IONOS, Nextcloud, OpenProject, and XWiki. The plan is to create a software-as-a-service platform (SaaS) that will directly compete with the well-known office solutions of major U.S. corporations.
First Version Launches in June
The first version of Euro-Office is set to be released on June 9, 2026. Interested users can access the software through the project’s public GitHub repositories. The developers are focusing on a familiar work environment to make the transition from Microsoft 365 as smooth as possible.
An important aspect of the project is compatibility with existing office document types. In addition to Microsoft Office formats, Euro-Office will also be compatible with file types from other applications such as LibreOffice. Users can continue to use their existing documents and workflows.
Focus on Digital Sovereignty
According to the initiators, Euro-Office is distinguished by its commitment to being fully under European control. The project is particularly aimed at public institutions, educational establishments, and companies that want to reduce their reliance on American cloud services.

IONOS CEO Achim Weiß points to the geopolitical developments of recent months in this context. Europe needs a reliable, easy-to-use, and fully Microsoft-compatible office solution. Euro-Office enables work with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in a familiar environment.
Europe Seeks Alternatives to U.S. Providers
Euro-Office is part of other European initiatives aimed at creating alternatives to software offerings from the U.S. For instance, the French government announced in April 2026 that it would increasingly use Linux instead of Windows.
Additionally, Microsoft Teams is to be replaced by the national communication platform Visio in French government agencies by 2027. Against this backdrop, Euro-Office could represent another option for public institutions and companies.
Whether the new office software can establish itself in the market in the long term remains to be seen. However, the project aims to challenge Microsoft’s strong position in the European office market.
