The World Bank’s October 2025 Africa Pulse Report has revealed that Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, was the best-performing currency in Africa during the first eight months of 2025.
According to the report, the cedi’s strength was supported by tight fiscal and monetary policies, rising export revenues, and improved market sentiment.
In contrast, during the same period in 2024, the cedi had depreciated by about 19% against the US dollar, the report added.
The second-best performing currency in Africa in 2025 is the Zambian kwacha, with a year-to-date appreciation of 16%.
However, the report identifies the South Sudanese pound and the Ethiopian birr as the weakest currencies in Africa in 2025.
