Pound to Dollar Forecast

GBP/USD Slides Ahead of UK Autumn Budget

The Pound to US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate fell to a six-day low on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of Wednesday’s UK Autumn Budget.

At the time of writing, GBP/USD was trading at around $1.3348, down approximately 0.2% from Monday’s opening levels.

The Pound (GBP) struggled to attract support as markets prepared for Chancellor John Healey’s first Autumn Budget, with concerns over the UK’s public finances weighing on Sterling.

Wednesday’s announcement comes at a difficult time for the government, with elevated borrowing costs and fragile economic growth leaving the Treasury with limited room for manoeuvre.

Healey faces the challenge of supporting economic activity while maintaining confidence in the government’s fiscal commitments.

The Chancellor must also consider the reaction of UK bond markets, where investors have become increasingly sensitive to the prospect of higher borrowing and additional pressure on the public finances.

Political considerations could complicate the Budget further, particularly if proposed spending reductions encounter opposition from Labour backbenchers.

Any suggestion that the government intends to loosen its fiscal rules or substantially increase borrowing could trigger renewed volatility in gilt markets, potentially putting additional pressure on Sterling.

Conversely, a credible package that reassures bond investors while offering support for economic growth could help the Pound recover.

For now, uncertainty over the measures Healey will announce has discouraged investors from taking significant positions in GBP.

The US Dollar (USD), meanwhile, found support on Monday as a deterioration in global risk appetite encouraged demand for traditional safe-haven currencies.

Financial markets initially showed some resilience during Asian trading, but sentiment weakened as European markets opened.

Investors became increasingly cautious ahead of several important economic and monetary policy announcements scheduled for later in the week.

The Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision will be particularly important for the Dollar, with traders looking for clues about whether policymakers intend to resume tightening monetary policy.

Upcoming US and Eurozone GDP figures have also added to uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook.

The more defensive market mood helped the ‘Greenback’ strengthen against Sterling, although investors remained reluctant to make substantial moves before the week’s major announcements.

Near-Term GBP/USD Forecast: UK Budget and US Data Could Test $1.33

The Pound to US Dollar exchange rate could remain under pressure on Tuesday as investors await Wednesday’s Autumn Budget.

With few significant UK economic releases scheduled, Sterling is likely to remain sensitive to political developments and movements in government bond yields.

Further concerns about the Chancellor’s fiscal plans could encourage additional selling, potentially bringing the $1.3300 level into focus.

However, any signs that the government intends to maintain a disciplined approach to borrowing could offer some reassurance and help GBP/USD stabilise.

Across the Atlantic, September’s US durable goods orders will provide the next notable economic release.

Economists expect orders to rebound, and a stronger-than-forecast reading could reinforce confidence in the US economy and provide additional support for the Dollar.

The latest Conference Board consumer confidence index will also attract attention.

A deterioration in household sentiment during October could limit Dollar gains, particularly if the figures raise fresh concerns about consumer spending and economic growth.

Nevertheless, the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy announcement and Wednesday’s UK Budget are likely to remain the dominant influences on GBP/USD.

A sustained move below $1.3300 would weaken Sterling’s near-term outlook, while a recovery above $1.3400 could suggest that recent selling pressure is beginning to ease.
