The Cranham Pound, which was used to impound livestock found trespassing, has been given a new lease of life after showing signs of deterioration.
The site will now serve as a rest spot for walking groups and an outreach nature classroom for Cranham School and scout groups.
The restoration project began in 2024 under the guidance of the Cranham Local History Society.
The earliest known documentation of the pound dates back to the late 18th century, though it may have origins in mediaeval times.
Realising the pound’s potential due to its location at the junction of five public rights of way, near the village pond, and Cranham Common, a working group was formed to create a plan for its future use.
The plan was supported by the parish council, Cranham Common Management Committee, Cranham Common Trust, Natural England, Cranham School, and Cotswold Voluntary Wardens.
Fundraising events and donations from village groups helped to bring the plan to fruition.
The restoration tasks made use of the varied skills of local residents, with additional help from the Cotswold Voluntary Wardens, who assisted in tasks such as gate installation and wall building.
The old pound gate, which was deemed hazardous due to its direct exit onto the road, has now been fixed.
Within this alcove, a bug house has been installed and filled by the Cranham Beavers, using materials including old Cranham pottery pieces.
A new gateway has been installed to provide safe, convenient access, complete with an eco-grid path to make it accessible for wheelchairs and baby buggies.
Repairs have also been made to the west wall.
A new large table and bench combo has been installed, providing seating for 12 adults or more children.
An information board gives a brief history of the common and the pound, along with a schematic map of the common and illustrations of species found there.
The hope is that both residents and visitors will enjoy the space for many years to come.
