The new facility has now been officially opened

A new major facility has opened after a multi-million pound investment that has secured and created 500 jobs.

Siemens Healthineers officially opened its IMMULITE Centre of Excellence for Immunoassay and Allergen Diagnostics at the 36-acre site in Llanberis, Gwynedd.

The investment was announced in 2022 with Welsh Government providing up to £7m in a grant supporting the development.

At the heart of this expansion is a dedicated critical raw materials manufacturing facility, new instrument manufacturing capabilities, in addition to a growing research and development department (R&D).

The critical raw materials facility will ensure essential supply of raw materials for global immunoassay production, including conjugated antibodies and allergens.

Meanwhile, the expanded instrument manufacturing facilities serve as the global manufacturing hub for the IMMULITE blood analysis system, supporting hospitals and laboratories in over 50 countries with diagnostics for allergies, fertility issues, and thyroid disorders. The centre’s R&D department will drive the development of next-generation allergy and immunoassay diagnostics, enabling laboratories worldwide to deliver a broader portfolio of routine and speciality blood tests.

As part of this expansion, Siemens Healthineers has launched nine new allergen tests, detecting sensitivities to substances such as peanuts, wheat, and dust mites. These innovations mark the start of a new generation of diagnostic tools, enabling faster and more precise assessments that help clinicians deliver better care worldwide.

“I welcome the opening of the Centre of Excellence and the long term commitment of Siemens Healthineers to Llanberis, which will secure hundreds of high-quality jobs in the area,” said first minister of Wales Eluned Morgan, as she visited the site today.

“This is exactly the type of investment we want in Wales, especially in an area not traditionally associated with large scale manufacturing. I cannot overstate how important it is to so many people in the community that these highly skilled, well-paid jobs are supported.

“We successfully secured this centre despite strong international competition, thanks to the vital support of the Welsh Government, which played a key role in turning this investment opportunity into a reality. This provides economic security for the future for many people in this part of north west Wales. ”

Annette Crowley-Luke, managing director of Siemens Healthineers Diagnostics Llanberis, said: “Llanberis has been a cornerstone of our global diagnostics operations for more than 30 years and today marks an exciting new chapter.

“This Centre of Excellence equips our teams with the facilities, the technology and the training to innovate faster and deliver better care – for our local community and for patients around the world.”
