Pound to Euro

The Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate was little changed on Tuesday, with the pairing remaining in a tight range as markets responded to German trade data and broader market factors.

At the time of writing, GBP/EUR was trading at €1.1644, virtually unchanged on the day.

The Euro (EUR) struggled for direction on Tuesday, with stronger-than-expected German trade figures providing support while EUR’s close inverse relationship with the US Dollar (USD) limited gains.

Germany’s July trade data exceeded expectations, helping the single currency as the country recorded its widest trade surplus since August 2024.

However, renewed demand for the US Dollar following Monday’s Labor Day holiday in the US capped the Euro’s progress.

With USD edging higher, EUR came under fresh pressure, leaving the single currency trading within a narrow range.

The Pound (GBP) similarly struggled to find momentum on Tuesday, with little in the way of UK economic data to drive trading.

Relatively stable UK bond markets also helped keep Sterling movements contained.

Sterling was able to shrug off some concerns surrounding trade and foreign policy. The UK government’s announcement that it would ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank prompted anger from Israeli ministers and some US lawmakers.

Israel threatened to retaliate, while Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, warned that the measures could put US-UK trade at risk.

The Pound appeared largely unfazed by the developments, although the uncertainty may have contributed to the subdued performance of GBP.

Near-Term GBP/EUR Forecast: Euro Could Remain Subdued ahead of ECB Decision

Looking ahead, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde is scheduled to speak on Wednesday evening.

Her remarks could move the Euro, although she is unlikely to provide major policy guidance with the bank’s interest rate decision due on Thursday.

With the ECB announcement fast approaching, Euro investors may prefer to hold their positions rather than make significant moves on Wednesday. This could leave the common currency trading relatively quietly.

Sterling, meanwhile, has little domestic data to contend with during the middle of the week.

UK political and economic headlines, alongside movements in the bond market, could therefore have a greater influence on the Pound, although subdued trading conditions may restrict GBP’s moves.
