Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez topped many pound-for-pound lists for years, building a current record of 63 wins and just two losses.
The Mexican icon will return to the ring in September to defend all four super-middleweight world titles against Terence Crawford, looking once again to prove he is the best in the world.
A loss to Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight following six straight points wins has seen Alvarez drop down the ‘best in the world’ rankings, so who does he think currently holds top spot?
Speaking to Froch on Fighting, Canelo named the unquestionable pound-for-pound top dogs in Oleksandr Usyk and Crawford, but also threw in ‘good to watch’ Gervonta Davis.
“There’s a lot of good fighters. I think it’s disrespectful to just mention one. Usyk is one of them. Gervonta Davis. Terence Crawford. I’m there, but I’m not mentioning my name.”
The general consensus currently amongst fans, fighters and analysts is that Naoya Inoue sits alongside Usyk and Crawford.
All three are two-weight undisputed champions, with the American of course looking to make that three against Canelo himself.
As for Davis, there is little doubt amongst fans that he is one of the most talented finishers in the sport, however a lack of activity and, in the eyes of some, commitment, has stopped him reaching his full potential as of yet.
The 30-year-old from Baltimore previously said he had planned to retire at the end of this year, however a controversial draw with Lamont Roach Jr sees him heading towards a rematch. Though a date of August 16 has been reported, Roach recently revealed that ‘Tank’ still hasn’t finalised his side of the deal.
