Real Madrid picking up Kylian Mbappe as a free agent (albeit with a massive signing bonus) will be seen by many as the signing of the summer, especially in terms of value. However, Villarreal could end up running them close, as they’ve now secured a bargain of their own.

Last week, the Yellow Submarine signalled their intention to trigger Ayoze Perez’s release clause, worth only €4m. They offered a contract to the Euro 2024 winner that was significantly higher than the one on the table from Real Betis, and as a result, the 31-year-old has made the move to La Ceramica.

Ayoze has signed a four-year deal, and he joins up with his new teammates with immediate effect. It means that he should be available for Villarreal’s La Liga opener, against Atletico Madrid on Monday.

Villarreal have secured a big signing, and it somewhat mitigates the departure of Alexander Sorloth, whom they will face at La Ceramica on Monday. It’s a bitter blow for Betis, who must now decide whether they want a replacement.
