Dogs are man’s best friend and are always there for us in good times and bad, but are we willing to do the same for them? A shelter in West Michigan is now putting out a plea to adopt and not shop to help some dogs in need.
The situation at Pound Buddies, Muskegon County’s only open-admission shelter, is becoming more critical by the day. As the county’s homeless dog population soars, the shelter has reached full capacity, with over 100 dogs in their care and no room to take in more, meaning the need for adoption has never been more urgent.
Pound Buddies accepts all dogs, regardless of age, breed, or health status. They provide a safe haven for those that are lost, abandoned, neglected, or abused. Unfortunately, the rising number of dogs being discarded in Muskegon County is overwhelming the shelter. Entire litters of puppies are being left to fend for themselves, while other dogs are abandoned in empty houses, dumped on lonely roads, or worse. These vulnerable animals inevitably find their way to Pound Buddies, where the dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to care for them.
With housing insecurity causing many people to give up or abandon their dogs, Pound Buddies has gone above and beyond to try and help. They’ve supplied food to homeless individuals and their pets, aiming to keep both comfortable in their difficult circumstances. Despite their best efforts, the shelter is bursting at the seams and desperately needs more people to adopt or foster dogs and puppies.
Adopting a dog from Pound Buddies does more than just save one life—it creates space for another dog in need. The shelter’s mission extends beyond providing immediate care; they work to reunite lost pets with their owners, find loving homes for adoptable animals, and reduce the number of unwanted pets through spay and neuter programs.
