Regeneration work is in progress to transform Shipley Market Square.
The re-development will create an adaptable space, suitable for events and pop-up market stalls featuring a new all-weather canopy.
Some existing market stalls have been removed to allow access, while the remainder will be removed, for the re-location of the market area onto the pedestrian precinct.
This means in future a market can be held under the canopy and along the promenade.
“Rain gardens” – shallow planted areas which receive rain run-off – with seating areas will be integrated into the layout and lime trees have been planted in the pedestrian zone close to the shops.
Paving work has also started and some new kerbs have been installed.
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning, and transport, said: “This is a transformative scheme to make Shipley town centre greener and more welcoming. We’ve seen the fantastic work that’s taken place in the city centre and it is great be able to bring those same principles to one of our most important town centres.
“This is a significant step towards creating a vibrant and adaptable town centre with a thriving market and we’re looking forward to seeing the progress continue over summer.”
Gill Thornton, chair of the Shipley Towns Fund Board, added: “The revitalisation of Shipley Market Square is important for residents and visitors as well as local businesses.
“By creating an inviting and flexible space, we will increase footfall, support our shops and restaurants, and help businesses to thrive.”
Funding for the project is through £1m of Streets for People cash from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and it has been allocated a further £3m of government money through the Shipley Towns Fund.
