Scientists tagged what is believed to be the biggest Great White Shark on record off the Georgia-Florida coast in January and the humungous sea creature has been lurking off the North Carolina coast as recently as last Monday, according to a report in The Sun.
The 1,600-pound shark, which has been nicknamed “Contender,” was initially tagged on January 17th approximately 45 miles off the Georgia-Florida coast.
The research group OCEARCH claimed it was the biggest shark ever tagged.
The Great White initially stayed in the vicinity of Florida before scientists starting noticing ‘‘pings” — when the shark’s dorsal fin comes above water — further north.
According to the report, Contender had no pings between March 12 and April 8. Most recently, it was monitored off the North Carolina coast. It apparently had travelled over 1,400 miles during a 109-day span.
Although Contender has been monitored off the Carolina coast, he’s not near the shore line, according to the report.
Sharks tend to travel north and further out to sea during the spring and summer months, according to scientists.
