Pound Sterling to Dollar Forecast

Sterling made modest gains against the US Dollar (USD) on Tuesday after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) delivered a more optimistic assessment of the UK’s economic prospects for 2026.

At the time of writing, the GBP/USD exchange rate was trading at approximately $1.3242, up almost 0.3% from the start of Tuesday’s session.

An improved outlook from the International Monetary Fund helped lift the Pound (GBP) on Tuesday, with the organisation revising its UK growth projection for the current year.

The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook now anticipates the UK economy will expand by 1.3% in 2026, up from its previous estimate of 1%.

The upgrade offered some encouragement amid ongoing concerns about the domestic economic outlook.

However, the brighter forecast came with a note of caution.

Persistently high energy prices and elevated long-term borrowing costs are expected to constrain economic activity, with growth projected to ease to around 1.2% in 2027.

For Chancellor John Healey, the improved near-term outlook provides a welcome boost ahead of his first Autumn Budget in the coming weeks.

UK government bond yields also retreated following the announcement.

Combined with the stronger growth forecast, this could offer Healey some additional fiscal breathing room as he attempts to support Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s economic growth ambitions without unsettling bond investors.

A brighter mood across financial markets weighed on the US Dollar on Tuesday, reversing some of the currency’s recent strength.

The US Dollar Index pulled back from an 18-month high as falling oil prices encouraged investors to take profits on the ‘Greenback’ and reduced demand for safe-haven assets.

Nevertheless, losses remained relatively contained, with traders reluctant to make substantial moves ahead of the latest US inflation figures.

The data could prove pivotal in shaping expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy decisions.

Near-Term GBP/USD Forecast: US Inflation Data Could Revive Dollar Demand

Attention now shifts to Wednesday’s US consumer price index (CPI) release, which could set the tone for the Pound to US Dollar exchange rate over the coming sessions.

September’s figures are expected to show headline inflation accelerating again, potentially reinforcing concerns that price pressures remain stubbornly high.

Although such an outcome may not be sufficient to revive expectations of an October interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve, it could nevertheless lend support to the US Dollar by strengthening the case for a more hawkish policy outlook.

Sterling traders, meanwhile, will be watching an appearance by Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey at the IMF and World Bank’s joint annual meeting in Bangkok.

Any further indication that the BoE is considering an interest rate increase at its next meeting could help the Pound extend its gains.
