Scotland have been handed a major incentive to qualify for EURO 2028 with the team scheduled to play all their home games at Hampden Park should they make it.

The tournament is to be staged in Scotland, England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland and while the four host nations will not gain automatic entry, they will have the bonus of playing their group games in front of their own fans should they qualify directly.

Hampden Park will host six matches in total, including one quarter-final tie, with the National Stadium’s first fixture set for Saturday, 10 June.

The competition will kick off in the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on June 9 with the final at Wembley on July 9, 24 teams contesting 51 matches in total.

The qualifying group stage draw will take place on 6 December 2026 in Belfast.

Following an independent assessment, it is anticipated EURO 2028 will generate £3.6 billion of socio-economic benefits for the UK and Ireland between 2028 and 2031. Benefits include job creation, regional prosperity and direct expenditure from international visitors to the tournament.

Local businesses, suppliers and communities within host cities will see direct economic gains, while dedicated training and volunteering initiatives will enhance skills development and open pathways into employment across the regions.

Government investments will be made to help deliver a world-class event and unlock social and economic benefits. The UK Government, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Government of Ireland will collectively invest up to £740m to ensure the event is safe, secure and offers a world-class experience for fans and communities across the UK and Ireland.

This government investment includes contributions, alongside football partners, to a £45m social impact fund, which will extend socio-economic benefits for communities beyond the host cities before, during and after the tournament.
