Offering a rare window into the internal processes of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Reliance’s JioHotstar and the RBI launched a new five-part documentary series titled ‘RBI Unlocked: Beyond the Rupee,’ on Tuesday.
Produced by Chalkboard Entertainment, the project was commissioned by the RBI to visually document its 90-year history and create awareness about its various functions and roles. The series offers an in-depth look into the RBI’s role in shaping India’s economic journey and aims to showcase the central bank’s work to a wide audience.
“The RBI, as a full-service central bank, performs a wide range of functions including currency management, monetary policy, regulation and supervision of banks and NBFCs, regulation of currency and interest rate, markets and payment and settlement systems, and financial inclusion. This documentary portrays the essence of RBI’s functions in an intelligible manner to a wider demographic of people,” said a RBI statement.
Peek into RBI
The docuseries features conversations with key voices from India’s financial leadership, including current and former RBI Governors, the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, and the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, alongside noted economists and industry experts. The series also uses footage from high-security gold vaults, printing presses, crisis management war rooms, etc and other archival footage to provide interviews and dramatic recreations.
“The show pulls back the curtain on how the central bank impacts the lives of 1.4 billion Indians, from influencing inflation and interest rates to safeguarding currency and responding to economic crises,” said JioHotstar in a press release.
The first episode of the series, As Good As Gold, that is already on the OTT platform, looks at the role of gold in India’s finances during the 1991 economic crisis. The series also plans to focus on other landmark events like the banking reforms era, and the RBI’s bio-bubble approach during the Covid-19 pandemic.
