LAZIO have been slammed amid their plans to transform the historic Stadio Flaminio into their new home.
The Italian giants currently share the Stadio Olimpico with arch-rivals Roma.
However, Lazio are determined to move to the esteemed rugby union ground, which hosted Italy’s home matches from 2000 until 2011.
Lazio and Roma used to play at Flaminio from 1989 until 1990 and the former are planning to double its capacity to up to 50,000 seats.
But Rome city councillor Giovanni Caudo lambasted the club’s vision by branding it a “joke” and a “mistake”.
Caudo argues the proposal ignores two crucial issues, which are mobility and protection of the historic structure.
Instead, the councillor claims it offers “embarrassing and technically implausible solutions
“
He added that the expanded stadium would create massive traffic in an area already home to venues that attract hundreds of cars every day.
Another point of contention is the assumption that half of the fans would arrive by public transport, even though no new infrastructure is planned until 2036 and the current network is already overstretched.
Caudo said: “This looks like a joke. Those car parks are already insufficient, and the project ignores the fact that events at Flaminio and Olimpico could overlap.

“You can’t speak of protecting and enhancing Flaminio if the original elements are completely overshadowed.
“We’re not talking about neighbourhood clubs but large corporations.
“Public assets cannot be handed over without tangible benefits for the communit
y.
“The project also expects a €24million (£21m) public contribution. That’s an insult to common sense.
“Lazio and their fans deserve a new stadium, but not in this form. Flaminio needs realistic and responsible ideas
.”
Lazio’s £381.2m project faces numerous hurdles as it must be approved by heritage authorities, the mobility and urban planning departments, the city’s asset office and the Ministry of Culture.
