November the 28th, 2025 – The extensive Jadrolinija fleet is set to undergo a 200 million euro renewal over the next three to four years.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Jadrolinija fleet renewal will take place in the next three to four years, and the plan is to acquire 10 to 20 brand new vessels worth a total of around 200 million euros. This was formally revealed on Wednesday during a conference entitled The Future of Transport in Croatia, which was organised by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, as well as the World Bank Group.
State Secretary of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Žarko Tušek, stated that the “focus topic” of the partnership between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure and the World Bank is Jadrolinija’s development and the acquisition of its new fleet. It was stressed that both of these points are absolutely necessary for the maintenance of life on the islands, which already faces certain specific difficulties and obstacles compared to life on the mainland. The actual survival of a decent life on the islands depends on a stable, strong and sustainable Jadrolinija, and the state will strive to make it a “green story”, that is, for the future vessels to be powered by green energy, assured Tušek.
He added that the exact number of new vessels that the state wants to purchase is still being planned and worked out. That also regards precisely how many ferries will be needed and how many other ships will become necessary in addition to that figure. He predicted that over the next three to four years, between 10 and 20 vessels, worth around 200 million euros, will have to be purchased for the Jadrolinija fleet renewal project.
The state is currently trying to develop a new package of relations with the World Bank for the Jadrolinija fleet renewal project, as was done for the railway sector, according to Tušek. He claimed that it is actually almost impossible to develop such large projects without the concrete support of strong financial institutions.
The World Bank’s director for Croatia, Jehan Arulpragasam, also spoke about the importance of good transport connections between the mainland and the islands. He also is of the belief that the quality of life of the islanders depends on good, reliable transport connections with the mainland. He added that he believes that Croatia is at a crucial moment for a new step forward in transport development and connecting all transport segments, including good railway connections with logistics.
The head of the World Bank for Croatia believes that the modernisation of the future Jadrolinija fleet should keep pace with the unfolding green transition, that is, that so-called clean fuels should be used.
According to him, the World Bank has been nurturing good relations with Croatia for decades now, and, among other things, it participated in the modernisation of the ports of Ploče and Rijeka. The Ambassador of Japan to Croatia, Wada Mitsuhiro, praised the long-standing good cooperation between Japan and Croatia and said that Croatia could receive assistance from Japan as part of the Jadrolinija fleet renewal project across a number of segments.
