Maurice, Iowa — A Tea, South Dakota man was taken to the hospital after an accident on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 9:45 a.m., 76-year-old Melvin Mellema of Maurice was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer southbound on Highway 75, three miles south of Sioux Center at the Million Dollar Corner. They tell us that 22-year-old Melkisidek Lyongola of Tea, South Dakota was driving a 2008 Grand Prix eastbound on Highway 10. Lyongola entered the intersection and the vehicles collided.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took Lyongola to Sioux Center Health.

The Mellema Ford sustained approximately $6,000 in damage. The Lyongola Pontiac sustained approximately $5,000 in damage.

Lyongola was cited on a charge of failure to obey stop sign.

The sheriff’s office says the Sioux Center Fire Department, Sioux Center Ambulance Squad, Maurice Fire Department, Maurice First Responders, Sioux Center Police Department, and the Orange City Police Department assisted with the response to the accident.
