Canada Election Result 2025 Highlights: Mark Carney’s Liberals win minority government; Poilievre loses his seat

In a phone conversation on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump congratulated Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney on his victory.

According to Carney’s office, the call was warm and positive, with President Trump extending his best wishes to Carney for his success in securing the top political office in Canada.

The conversation also touched on future cooperation, with both leaders agreeing to meet face-to-face in the near future to discuss key areas of mutual interest.

In his victory speech, Prime Minister Carney promised to confront US President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade stance with the “overwhelming positive force of a united Canada.”

“We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7,” Carney declared. “It is time to be bold, to meet this crisis with the overwhelming positive force of a united Canada.”

In the latest Canadian general election, the Liberal Party emerged with the most votes and seats, though questions remain about whether it will secure a majority in Parliament.

According to Elections Canada, the Liberals garnered 8,335,105 votes, winning or leading in 168 seats. The Conservatives followed closely with 7,928,163 votes and 144 seats, indicating a fiercely contested race.

The Bloc Québécois received 1,222,671 votes, translating into 23 seats, while the New Democratic Party (NDP) suffered major losses, dropping to just 7 seats with 1,200,358 votes—a steep decline from its 2021 performance.

The Green Party secured 238,461 votes and held onto a single seat in Parliament.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh became emotional as he expressed his gratitude to his family, caucus, and staff.

“Almost eight years ago I was elected the leader of this incredible party, this incredible movement. I worked really hard to be worthy of this trust, to live up to the legacy of our movement,” he said. “I’ll be stepping down as leader.”

“Obviously I’m disappointed that we could not win more seats, but I’m not disappointed in our movement. I’m hopeful for our party,” Singh told supporters.

Jagmeet Singh announced he will step down as leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) after losing his own seat in the Canadian federal election.

The party was projected to win only 7 out of 343 seats, down from 25 seats in 2021, and below the 12-seat threshold required for official party status. NDP’s national vote share plunged to just over 5%, a sharp drop from 17.8% in 2021.

Singh lost in Burnaby Central. He came in third place in his own riding Ottawa. Singh, aged 46, said he would step down once an interim leader is appointed.

Jagmeet Singh lost his seat in the House of Commons, one he’s held since 2019, coming in third. His seat of Burnaby Central in British Columbia was affected by redistribution ahead of this election.

In his victory speech, Mark Carney said, “As I’ve been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” Carney said. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never … ever happen. But we also must recognize the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”

The public broadcaster CBC and CTV News both projected the Liberals would form Canada’s next government, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament.

Mark Carney congratulated other leaders for “all the work they did and their service to Canada, now and in the future.” He also congratulated Poilievre for a “hard-fought campaign” and his “commitment to the country that we both love.” In his victory speech, Carney said he was “looking forward to delivering for Canadians.”

Poilievre, the Conservative leader, congratulated Mark Carney and said the Conservatives will “do our job to hold the government to account.”

Poilievre’s Conservatives are closing in on Carney’s Liberals. Earlier, Conservatives were leading on just around 100 seats as Liberals maintained lead on 146 seats. Now, Liberals are leading on 154 seats and Conservatives on 151 seats, Election Canada website says.

Elections Canada began releasing results, and several seats have already been called in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. Polling stations in Alberta are now closed. There are 37 seats at stake in the province, up from 34 the last go-around. 

According to Globe and Mail, the Conservatives are expected to dominate Alberta again, but the Liberals could gain ground in the province’s two largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton.

CBC news reported that results are expected to start flowing in soon from over 200 ridings in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Polling stations in B.C. and Yukon are open for another 30 minutes.

As Canada votes to elect its next Prime Minister, US President Donald Trump posted about making Canada a US State.

He wrote on Truth social media, “Good luck to the Great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st.” 

“State of the United States of America. No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be. Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE! America can no longer subsidize Canada with the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year that we have been spending in the past. It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!,” Trump added.

According to CBC’s Poll Tracker, the Liberals (Mark Carney’s party) maintained an edge in Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Atlantic Canada, and were favoured to win the most seats.

Canada waits for the results of an unprecedented election that will choose a leader to take on President Donald Trump, whose trade war and annextion threats have outraged the US’s northern neighbor.

Pierre Poilievre said in a post on X, “President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box. Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state. Today Canadians can vote for change so we can strengthen our country, stand on our own two feet and stand up to America from a position of strength.”

In early counting, the Liberals were leading in 21 of Atlantic Canada’s 32 districts, which are also called seats, followed by the Conservatives with 11. The Liberals held 23 seats before the election, Reuters reported.

The first polls have closed, with voting ending in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
