Floyd Mayweather – a past pound-for-pound number one fighter – has weighed in on the debate as to who deserves that honour today.
Mayweather famously hung up the gloves with a perfect 50-0 record, beating the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez along the way. Not only was he regarded as the best of his time, but he believes he should be seen as the greatest to ever step through the ropes.
There are standouts from this current era aiming for the same, namely Oleksandr Usyk, Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford, who are widely regarded as the top three fighters regardless of weight class.
All of the above are two-time undisputed and have as good an argument as the other for the top spot. As far as Mayweather is concerned, it goes to Crawford, as per an interview with Brian Mazique,
“I think Terence Crawford, right now in the sport of boxing, is the pound-for-pound best fighter. It’s good to see him in the position that he’s in … Terence Crawford, continue to be great.”
Crawford is currently a four-weight world champion aiming to make it five when he faces Canelo this September, jumping up two divisions from his last outing for the challenge.
The switch-hitter from Omaha is confident that the skillset that has seen him come through the likes of Amir Khan, Viktor Postol, Shawn Porter and Errol Spence Jr will be enough to become just the third man to hand Alvarez a defeat in over 60 bouts.
‘Bud’ – who is undefeated in 41 – recently said the he believes a win over the elite Mexican would make him one of the top three best fighters of all time.
