Carl Froch had a difficult decision to make as he discussed the best pound-for-pound boxers in recent memory on his official YouTube account.
As one of boxing‘s most well-known stars, Floyd Mayweather created a legacy of sheer dominance that very few could ever dream of matching. Hanging up his gloves with an unbeaten record of 50-0, with 27 KOs, it’s not hard to see why many hail the American as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the sport’s history.
Throughout his 50 bouts, not a single opponent has managed to send him to the canvas, an unbelievable stat that highlights his astounding defensive genius. He used his ‘Philly Shell’ defensive style to good effect, with his set-up allowing him to utilise his impeccable footwork to evade his opponent, while keeping his lead shoulder directly in front of him to deflect oncoming jabs.
His impenetrable defence meant that very few were able to land any clean shots, leading to his ‘Pretty Boy’ nickname, as he often exited the ring with very little visible damage, although the same could not be said for his opponents.
With an unmatched boxing IQ, Mayweather was a master at distance control, manipulating his opponents into areas which allowed him to reel off devastating combinations, while timing his punches to perfection.
A 15-time world champion across five different weight classes, his list of victims includes Oscar De La Hoya, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, and Manny Pacquiao, among many, many others.
A true boxing icon, many hail the Michigan-native as the best pound-for-pound boxer. However, former super middleweight champion, Froch, opted for a current fighter over ‘Money Mayweather.’
Carl Froch Chooses Active Boxer Over Floyd Mayweather
Speaking on his YouTube channel FrochOnFighting, he played a game of ‘winner stays on’ to determine who is the best pound-for-pound boxer of all time.
He started off by picking Mayweather over the likes of Pacquiao, Canelo, and Terence Crawford, but had a more difficult decision when it came to the current undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk.
When asked who he would pick, he replied: “Now you’re asking. I want to put them on a level par. But, you know what, I’m going to have to pick Oleksandr Usyk.”
‘The Cobra’ then opted for Usyk over names such as Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko, and Gennady Golovkin, before coming to his final decision in a match-up of the Ukrainian and Roy Jones Jr.
“Roy Jones, in his prime, against anybody, including Oleksandr Usyk, would simply be too good, too fast. So, Roy Jones.”
