DAILY RECAP:
The Pound (GBP) drifted lower on Monday as investors grew increasingly cautious ahead of Chancellor John Healey’s inaugural Autumn Budget on Wednesday.
While investors have welcomed the Chancellor’s pledge to give businesses more ‘breathing space’, there are concerns about what support he will be able to provide given the UK’s current fiscal position.
Healey faces a challenging backdrop, with rising costs and weaker-than-expected tax receipts having eroded the headroom available to fund new spending.
The Chancellor must also be careful not to unsettle bond investors, as any indication that the government intends to increase borrowing significantly or abandon its fiscal commitments could trigger renewed volatility in the Pound and UK government bond markets.
Conversely, a credible plan to shore up the public finances, while also supporting growth, may help reinforce investor confidence and lift Sterling.
The Euro (EUR) edged higher on Monday, finding some relief from persistent French debt concerns after Germany’s latest business sentiment figures surprised to the upside.
The Ifo business climate index rose to 90.2 in October, up from 89.9 in September and ahead of expectations for a more modest improvement.
October’s index saw sentiment climb to its highest level since May 2023, amid hopes that Germany’s economic recovery is gathering pace.
Near-Term GBP/EUR Forecast: Investor Caution to Limit Movement
Looking ahead, the Pound Euro exchange rate may be left to trade in a narrow range through the first half of this week, ahead of key events taking place later in the session.
GBP investors will of course be focused on Healey’s impending budget and will be looking for any additional reports on what measures he might announce on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Euro may find itself in a holding pattern ahead of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) interest rate decision on Thursday.
While no policy changes are expected from the bank this month, a more cautious outlook from the bank in light of France’s ongoing debt crisis could test EUR support in the latter half of the week.
