This Way, a new budget retailer, has been given permission to open in the former Carpetright store in Euro Retail Park, part of Ransomes Europark.
Ipswich Borough Council approved the plans for the store to open but said that conditions must be followed including what the shop can and can’t sell.
This means This Way is set to stock food and drink, tobacco, health and beauty products, DIY products, garden products, furniture, electricals and other bulk goods which can’t be sold in the town centre due to the display space needed.
Toys, homeware utilities and seasonal items are also set to be included but will take up no more than 35% of the floorspace.
Items that are not allowed to be sold include clothing, footwear, jewellery, perfume, books, magaines, sports items and musical instruments.
When plans were first submitted, This Way said they will target the value retail sector, meaning that a smaller range of products will be offered, typically at a lower price point.
It will join a number of supermarkets in the area including Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Waitrose, B&M and The Food Warehouse.
Ipswich Borough Councillor for the Priory Heath ward, which includes the retail park, Owen Bartholomew, welcomed the news of This Way coming to Ipswich.
He said: “I am pleased to see This Way supermarket opening up in Ransomes Europark.
“It’s great that it’s going to offer residents of both Priory Heath ward and other residents in the area more choice regarding shopping and bagging a bargain.
“With all of us watching our wallet, it’s great that there are more budget friendly options.
“What this shows in Ipswich generally, is that more people are opening businesses as they have confidence in the town and borough.”
