President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to stop converting prices into the pre-2007 currency, saying the practice continues to affect how many people understand the value of money.
He made the call at the Cedi@60 International Currency Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
President Mahama recounted an incident at a funeral where a donor presented GH¢100,000, but the crowd did not respond until the master of ceremonies announced the amount as one billion cedis in the old currency.
He said the reaction showed that nearly twenty years after the redenomination, many people still rely on old-currency figures.
He encouraged the public to move on from the habit.
The President also expressed concern about how many Ghanaians handle currency notes.
He said poor handling of the cedi note increases printing costs and affects the quality of notes in circulation and urged the Bank of Ghana to intensify public education on proper handling and storage of the currency.
President Mahama said recent signs of stability in the economy were visible in everyday transactions.
He observed that some car dealers and landlords who previously quoted prices in dollars were now issuing invoices and taking payment in cedis.
He said the development reflected growing confidence in the national currency and credited the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance for their work.
He also referred to S&P’s upgrade of Ghana’s sovereign rating from CCC+ / C to B- / B, announced on November 7, 2025.
He said the upgrade showed that economic conditions were improving.
Mr Mahama noted that the independence of the Bank of Ghana remained central to sustaining the gains recorded so far.
He said a strong and autonomous central bank was necessary for maintaining stability and public trust.
He urged the central bank to expand public education on the use of the cedi for domestic transactions, proper handling of currency notes and improved financial literacy.
