ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WKRC) – Police detained a “prehistoric perp” after finding him loitering in the middle of the street – a 400-pound, 10-foot-long alligator.
According to a Facebook post from the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and officers with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission were called to respond to a creature that was “loitering or lounging” on a roadway, obstructing traffic.
“Pepe the Gator, 350-400 lbs, and almost 10 feet in length, has been cited for Suspicion of Being a Dinosaur Without Proper Papers, Public Loitering with Intent to Sunbathe, and Obstructing Traffic,” the post read.
According to information obtained by People from a sheriff’s office spokesperson, Pepe was taken to a Marine Corps base in order to protect the animal from cars and other dangers on the roadway, despite local backlash from those who believed the animal should have been left alone.
“It was lost and wasn’t where it needed to be,” the spokesperson told the outlet.
