The image shows a mock-up of a “BRICS bill” that was gifted to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit in Kazan.

This Facebook post with an image claiming that BRICS countries have issued a currency is MISSING CONTEXT.

The Amharic text accompanying the picture translates to, “The currency of the BRICS member countries was announced by Putin yesterday, and the flags and names of all the countries were printed on the currency. Surprisingly, neither the flag nor the name of the holy Ethiopia is on the money. Why is it not on it? Office of the Prime Minister-Ethiopia, we need an urgent explanation.”

A similar claim on X (formerly Twitter) reads, “BRICS is introducing a new currency for the almost world to use instead of the dollar.”

However, a reverse image search using Google led to different reports that established BRICS countries did not issue a currency.

On 23 October 2024, BRICS News through its verified X account reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been gifted a mock-up of a “BRICS bill” at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The images under scrutiny were shared along with this report.

A similar report was made by Sputnik on 23 October 2024. “At the summit in Kazan, Putin was shown a symbolic ‘BRICS banknote.’ The note ‘represents the collective work being carried out within the BRICS framework’,” part of the post states.

“A debate on creating a common BRICS currency was held behind closed doors at the summit today,” adds the post.

As seen here and here, other reports also stated that BRICS unveiled a symbolic banknote.

The 2024 BRICS summit was held in Kazan from 22 to 24 October 2024. Ethiopia participated in the summit.
